Tornadoes sweep through Dallas area; significant damage
At least eight people were killed in the Dallas area, during yesterday’s outbreak of storms.

Two additional deaths occurred about 17 miles to the north in unincorporated Copeville.
Numerous photos and video sent to FOX4 showed a large tornado that appeared to move through the Garland and Rowlett areas near Lake Ray Hubbard. “Driving around the area, you can see that it’s total devastation”, Barineau said.
“As of right now, we are still in the search and rescue mode”.
A tornado is reported to have gone through the suburb east of Dallas, damaging several homes.
The death toll in the Southeast climbed to 18 on Saturday after days of tumultuous weather – unusual warmth, tornadoes and torrential downpours – wreaked havoc during the Christmas holiday.
“This is a huge impact on our community and we’re all suffering”, he said.
Garland resident Pat McMillian said the tornado left neighborhoods in darkness. Debra Smith, 62, told the Dallas Morning News she took shelter in a bathtub of her third-floor apartment in Garland as the storms rolled through. “I’m a Texas girl, and I never had one like this before”.
An official with the Dallas County Sheriff’s office says deputies are responding to damages caused by a tornado east of Dallas, including a trailer park ablaze.
One tornado was reported in Ovilla and Desoto, and also reportedly struck portions of Midlothian, Waxahachie, Glenn Heights.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Anthony Bain in Fort Worth said several tornadoes touched down in the Dallas area, although the full extent of damage would not be known until daylight Sunday.
The storms caused damage to over 100 homes, mobile homes, and businesses, said the MEMA.
Collin County is about 45 miles northeast of Dallas. Crews chipped away at the power failures later in the evening, but more than 15,000 customers still lacked electricity early Sunday morning. The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency said Saturday that authorities were monitoring areas for possible flooding.
Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley will tour areas in his state damaged by floods a day after declaring a state of emergency in all counties affected by excessive rain.
Other parts of Texas and Oklahoma, including El Paso, are under winter storm warnings, while North Texas, central Oklahoma and central Kansas are under a winter storm watch. There were no injuries and the evacuations were just precautionary, officials confirmed to The Weather Channel.
The National Weather Service says a tornado was on the ground south of Dallas.

Snow fell as the Sun Bowl college football game between Miami and Washington State Saturday afternoon in the Mexican border city of in El Paso, which is forecast to get 6 to 8 inches of snow from the storm. Several interstates and highways were closed by high water levels, as well. Authorities reported more accidents than usual, which they blamed on the weather, the report added.
