Toronto Blue Jays acquire infielder Cliff Pennington from Arizona Diamondbacks

Iit wouldn’t be true baseball life, though, if there wasn’t a little bad news sprinkled in. Devon Travis, the starting second baseman when healthy, is on the disabled list for the second time this season with a shoulder injury.

“I was thinking when it first happened he might need a game or two and he’d be ready to go after his 15 days were up, but that’s not going to happen”, said Gibbons.

The Toronto Blue Jays boosted their infield depth, acquiring Carroll grad Cliff Pennington and cash from the Arizona Diamondbacks for a minor leaguer on Saturday. He’d be considered an upgrade over Munenori Kawasaki. Being used as a part-time utility player who has played second base, third base, shortstop, and left field, Pennington is hitting.237/.314/.281 with one home run and ten RBI in 135 at bats.

Pennington heard trade rumours before the non-waiver trade deadline passed but was caught off guard by Saturday’s deal.

Pennington has spent eight years in the majors, five with Oakland and the last three with Arizona. SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo was first to report the deal, followed by Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith.

Minor league shortstop Dawel Lugo is heading to the Diamondbacks as part of the trade.
