This sudden cold snap comes after unseasonably high temperatures so far this winter.
An Extreme Cold Weather Alert has been issued by the Halton Region Health Department.
In Toronto, the alert means there will be extra services for homeless people in the city, including two 24-hour drop-ins, additional shelter beds, TTC tokens for people to get to shelter, increased street outreach, and a request to shelters to relax their service restrictions. People with heart problems can experience worsening of their condition up to several days after cold weather occurs.
Overnight temperatures are expected to remain in the extreme cold range until Tuesday.
City recreation and other spaces designated as warming centres are also available for those who need to keep warm and in Hamilton, the MacNab Transit Terminal will stay open until HSR service ends.
Choose wool or synthetic fabrics for your clothes instead of cotton, because cotton stops keeping you warm once it gets wet.
This alert is in effect until temperatures rise above -15 degrees Celsius (without wind-chill) or weather conditions improve and the risks involved with prolonged exposure are reduced.
