1, the base fare will drop by $1 from $4.25 a ride to $3.25.

Vancouver city council has unanimously approved a staff recommendation to urge the Ministry of Transportation and other stakeholders to provide “a renewed policy direction” in connection with ride-sharing technology. “That’s why I supported Council’s decision to reduce the minimum fare paid by the public by $1”, said Mayor John Tory in a statement released today.

Hubbard’s statement did point out the fare break “comes out of the pockets of Toronto’s hard-working taxi drivers, who are still being forced to compete against black market providers who continue to ignore our city’s bylaws”.

Will this help Toronto taxis compete with Uber?

“Customers desire and expect that regulatory reviews will serve to instill a new, more level playing field in which Uber is “here to stay” yet operates in concert with the taxi industry”, the report states.

The company has shown great interest in setting up shop in Vancouver for more than a year, and is already operating in a handful of Canadian cities as well as most major west coast cities in the US. As a result, drivers working for UberX don’t have to purchase taxi licences or complete the required taxi-training program.

A report on the new framework is expected to come before council in the spring.
