Toronto win draft lottery, get first overall pick
Once the “big three” are off the board, all bets are off. And the team picking one spot ahead of the Canucks, the Edmonton Oilers, are shaping up to be the league’s most fascinating draft day wildcard. The lottery used to be for just the first overall pick.

It was a bad night overall for Canada’s three most Western teams. The Oilers in 2010 were the last last-place team to win the lottery, which led to them selecting Taylor Hall. Burke followed the Sedin draft by taking Nathan Smith in the first round in 2000, and impetuously sacrificed 2001 top pick R.J. Umberger to rent Martin Rucinsky for a few weeks in 2004. One by one, the teams with low odds were told they didn’t hit the lottery. “We’re still a ways away from the draft so just trying to stay in the moment right now and enjoy my time here and focus on the world championship”. “We knew we were going to pick somewhere in the top four, and we knew we were going to get a player that would have an impact”.
Linden’s lucky charm today is a hockey card given him by Kalli Quinn of her late father, Pat Quinn, the Canuck general manager who drafted Linden second over-all in 1988, which was a turning point for the franchise.
“We earned this the hard way. It wasn’t a whole lot of fun this year”, said Shanahan. “But our guys, our coaching staff, did a lot of really good things in Toronto, but this will certainly help”.
Below is the final full result of NHL Entry Draft. One number is unassigned, and the other 1,000 weighted to reflect the 14 teams’ finish in the standings.
While Winnipeg is not at Ground Zero like Toronto, adding a Finnish winger, either Patrik Laine or Jesse Puljujarvi, to an already deep prospect pool is a definite shot in the arm.
After that, there is a group of players ranked fourth to 11th all of whom have attractive qualities. That is, if he goes No. 1.
All seven Canadian teams are lottery contenders this year, and there’s a 68.5-percent chance that one of them wins the No. 1 pick. Auston Matthews, a kid from Scottsdale is projected to be drafted first overall and has drawn comparisons to the likes of Jonathan Toews.
Acquiring the first overall pick alone would come with a hefty price tag.
As it stands now, the Canucks are slated to pick third in this year’s draft and have a 11.5% chance of securing the first overall pick, but could also fall down to sixth place. Vancouver was run by Brian Burke in those days, now Calgary’s president of hockey operations.
In August 2014 the National Hockey League changed the lottery format, and for the first time in 2016 the lottery drawing will assign the first three picks of the draft. It wouldn’t be surprising for the Oilers to do literally anything at all with the fourth overall selection – trade it, select a defenceman, take a forward, go off the board a bit – except for trade up. The lottery odds break down in order from least regular season points, to most, and each of the 14 non-playoff teams have a chance to get one of the three lottery choices.
