Chelsea are considering a January swoop for Tottenham full-back Ben Davies, according to The Sun.

Chelsea have already drafted in Spanish left-back Marcos Alonso this summer, but Blues boss Antonio Conte wants further reinforcements and is believed to have put Davies at the top of his wanted list.

And while that may be a rather obvious line, Chelsea do need to pay attention to their home-grown numbers, with only six registered in their squad of 22.

The 23-year-old’s versatility is thought to make him a particularly attractive prospect, with Davies excelling on the left side of a three-man defence during Wales’s incredible Euro 2016 run.

Premier League rules state eight homegrown players have to be named in a club’s 25-man squad and the report suggests Conte knows he has to add to his homegrown contingent. Davies has only started 24 Premier League games since joining the club, with him and England global Danny Rose tussling for a first-team place.

Although Davies is seen by Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino as the second-choice left-back to Danny Rose at White Hart Lane, Chelsea’s interest has been aroused after Davies’ impressive displays for Wales during Euro 2016.

The west Londoners have been looking to sign a young British defender for some time, having also been linked with Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson and Burnley’s Michael Keane.
