The plans must be formally approved by the London Mayor’s office with Boris Johnson having previously expressed his enthusiasm for the project.

Tottenham confirmed the club’s £400million renovation of White Hart Lane has been approved by Haringey Council.

Tottenham have played their home games at White Hart Lane, which seats 36,284 people, since 1899.

‘Are you surprised?’ said Wenger a laughing press conference audience when he was asked about the new Tottenham stadium’s capacity.

The stadium, which includes a 17,000 seat single-tier “home” stand at the southern end, now has to be approved by the Greater London Authority.

The last thing that much be done before Daniel Levy can sanction the full work is to find a temporary home, likely for one season, so that the current White Hart Lane can be demolished and the new one built. Tottenham will hope to move into their new grounds before the 2018-19 campaign, if all goes according to plan.

The stadium is set to be completed by the start of the 2018/19 season and its capacity will be 61,000 – eclipsing that of Arsenal’s Emirates stadium by just over 500.

This is reflected in their plans, as according to goal.com, “The club submitted a revised plan to the Haringey Council which included the provision for National Football League games to be hosted at the stadium, with NFL-specific facilities, such as a retractable roof and larger changing rooms as well as extra facilities for injury recovery”.
