Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino: Time for Vincent Janssen to step up

Tottenham Hotspur announced that Harry Kane has ligament damage to his right ankle, which is no major surprise after seeing him writhe around in pain before being stretchered off the pitch during their win over Sunderland this weekend. He fits in very well with the team and this is a big opportunity for him to show his real quality.

The good news for Mauricio Pochettino is he’s not screwed, which he would have been a year ago.

He said: “We know how they love Tottenham and it’s an opportunity to share a good moment with them and then I think it’s an important game for us”.

“[Edwards] is a very good prospect and potentially he can be a top player but we need to be patient and tell him that he has a lot of talent – enough talent to be a top player, a great player – but now it’s how he builds his future”. Janssen has already made one start this season and has appeared as a substitute another five times, so he’s not coming into the team cold or without match fitness.

Edwards, 17, has been included in the Spurs squad for the third round EFL Cup clash at White Hart Lane and could make an appearance after signing a two-year deal with the club over the summer. He’s a very nice guy but he’s very strong, he likes to work very hard.

Asked if the layoff could prove a positive for Kane – who has spent the last two summers on global duty with England and started every league game since November 2014 – Pochettino said: “We need to be positive”.

The 22-year-old Dutch worldwide hit 31 goals for AZ in all competitions last season, and his displays in the Netherlands tempted Pochettino into signing him – despite the questionable record of players moving from the Eredivisie to the Premier League.

“No, it’s not a risk”.

He could also miss key Premier League fixtures against Manchester City, Leicester City and Arsenal. The main striker is [Sergio] Aguero.

Pushed for details on Kane’s injury, Pochettino preferred to allow his assistant manager Jesus Perez to clarify the situation. Now it’s time for them to show it off. And they are changing the grades, there are too many grades now – 1,2,3, a, b, c!

The England worldwide hasn’t quite found his best form this season, scoring just twice in five Premier League outings, but he remains one of the most formidable strikers in the division and one of the intrinsic members of Spurs’ starting XI.

“Of course, it’s like an accident, never again the auto is the same or never again you know”.
