Tough break: Francois likely to start after Maguire injury

If Florida State wants a spot in the College Football Playoff, the Seminoles will have to start the journey without presumptive starting quarterback Sean Maguire.

Florida State, ranked No. 4 in the AP Top 25 poll, opens the season September 5 vs. “But, you know something, he’ll keep working”.

Florida State quarterback Sean Maguire has a broken bone in his right foot, putting freshman Deondre Francois in position to open the season as the starter.

Francois and Maguire were locked in a tight battle during the first week of fall camp to lead the Seminoles.

Francois was seen taking snaps with the first team during the open portion of practice.

As a junior, he threw for 1,520 yards, 11 touchdowns and six interceptions. FSU defensive back Derwin James had to undergo a similar procedure before the start of fall camp.

“Some good, some bad, but I’m pleased”, Fisher said.

Jimbo Fisher watches as Deondre Francois goes through a practice drill.

Maguire needs foot surgery and is expected to miss four weeks, Safid Deen of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

The injury occurred Wednesday, on the second day of practice.

Although Maguire won’t be on the field for a while, Fisher said he expects that Maguire will continue to maintain a regular presence at team meetings and during practice – same as he did while sidelined during the spring.
