Tough day for Archer ends with Rays’ 3-0 loss to Royals

The Royals got an inspired effort out of Danny Duffy last night who carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning and surrendered just the one hit in a very solid outing for him but more importantly it gave the Royals a big victory that could propel them back into the AL Central race.

“It was hittable, a good pitch to hit”, Jennings said of the fastball he hit into the left-field corner. Kimbrel made his first appearance since having surgery to fix a medial meniscus tear in his left knee.

A wave of injuries ravaged the Royals in 2016 as they attempted to return to a third straight World Series, and their starting pitching has underwhelmed as well despite not enduring the kind of setbacks the lineup did.

Archer (5-15) took his major-league-leading 15th loss despite holding Kansas City to three runs on six hits. He also had a single. Jose Altuve, who homered earlier in the game, opened the 14th with a single to shallow left field off Feldman (5-4), and Correa followed with his hit off the fence in right-center field.

Astros 2, Blue Jays 1, 14 inn.: Carlos Correa hit an RBI double in the 14th inning off Scott Feldman hours after Feldman was traded from Houston to Toronto.

Cubs 5, Marlins 0 • Kyle Hendricks pitched a seven-hitter for his second career shutout, providing Chicago’s bullpen a needed breather in a win at home.

Santos, 21, was 4-2 with a 2.91 ERA in 10 starts with Augusta this season. Anthony Rizzo finished a home run shy of the cycle and reached base five times. Greinke would go on to win the 2009 American League Cy Young Award.

The Rays have now lost 11 of their last 12 against the Royals.

Duffy was asked if there was disappointment after giving up the hit in the eighth, and he was blunt in saying there wasn’t, with his focus squarely on just winning. The former third-round pick has been by far the Royals’ most consistent starter since joining the staff and ran his record to 7-1 on the season despite not making his first start until May 15. Solarte’s second hit was the key blow during a five-run fifth.
