Towns Along The Mississippi River Evacuate As Floodwaters Swell
The Illinois department of transportation said several roadways were closed in the southern part of the state because of flooding, including Interstate 70 near Pleasant Mound and roads along the Mississippi River near Chester and the Shawnee National Forest.

Martin Malloy, Upper Mississippi River captain of the port, closed that portion of the river because of extremely high water levels and fast currents.
In Caddo and Bossier parishes, emergency officials said the Red at Shreveport was expected to crest Sunday at 31 feet, slightly above flood stage.
Meanwhile in St. Louis, Mayor Francis Slay declared a flood emergency in response to the rising Mississippi River, activating the city’s emergency operations center to ease coordination of flood-fighting efforts.
The facility houses almost 3,700 inmates.
A week of chaotic weather continued throughout the United States as a storm system that spawned deadly tornadoes in the Midwest and Southwest pushed north. More than 40 people have died of weather-related causes during the Christmas holidays in the past week.

The NWS says roads in low lying areas and swampland downstream from Columbia could become flooded, especially the areas that are already saturated from heavy rain we saw last week.
Parts of eastern Oklahoma, Arkansas and IL are still subject to flood warnings. Up to a foot (30 cm) of snow was forecast for Iowa and the Great Lakes region, the National Weather Service said.

About 4,000 flights scheduled for Tuesday were delayed or canceled by the afternoon, with the Newark, Dallas and Chicago airports hardest hit.
