But many residents and holidaymakers were forced to flee, as festivities were abandoned when the scale of the threat became apparent.

The fires are expected to continue into the new year with the possibility of burning until January or February.
Evacuation sirens sounded in towns along the road, a major tourist attraction southwest of Melbourne, as the normally packed route was closed and residents moved to hastily organized evacuation centers nearby.
Cooler weather and heavy rain overnight slowed the spread of the fire though fire fighters warned they have yet to bring the situation under control, the report said. “We do recommend they leave early”.
The CFA said people wishing to reach Anglesea, Aireys Inlet and Lorne would be able to, and those heading to Apollo Bay, the Twelve Apostles and Port Fairy should travel inland. “We don’t want to hear of injuries”.
When asked if it was safe to rebuild, Mr Bracks said locals “understand the risks”.
The CFA feared the fire would run north during the night, driven by a strong wind change, and may hit the outskirts of Lorne.
The fire along the Great Ocean Road, a national heritage stretch of road along the south-eastern coast, began on Christmas Day with police beginning to evacuate houses in some areas around midday.
Firefighters are continuing to battle the blaze.
“I think they’ll be using this fire and this experience as a real case study that if you plan and if you prepare, and if you’ve got some very fearless and courageous locals who came and supported them… this is a triumph in many respects that no-one lost their life”, he told 774 ABC Melbourne.
Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism chairman Wayne Kayler-Thomson says the bushfire has significantly affected the area’s most profitable time of year.
The bushfire led to the temporary closure of a section of Great Ocean Road, which goes along Victoria’s coastline and past the area’s popular Apostles – a collection of giant limestone stacks that project dramatically out of the sea, the AP reported.

Premier Daniel Andrews visited Wye River on Monday to view the scene of the Christmas Day destruction, which claimed 116 properties, 18 of which were in neighbouring Separation Creek.
