UPS says it plans to hire 95,000 extra staff to cope with an anticipated heavy increase in volume between November this year and January 2017. While holiday hiring has been flat to down in stores, it is rising for transportation and warehousing services part of the trend toward more online shopping, according to workplace consultant Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

It may still be summer but the holiday hiring season already has started for some businesses, including Toys “R” Us, which announced its seasonal hiring plans Thursday for its stores and distribution centers. The retailer expects to add at least 10,900 workers in five of its biggest markets: New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

About 37% of seasonal hires over the last three years have been hired permanently, he said. Target, for example, said it would add 7,500 people in distribution centers.
