Toyota has announced a recall for the 14,906 units of the 86 sports auto sold in Australia between April 9, 2012 and March 18, 2015. Subaru BRZ is also affected because the model is basically the same vehicle only with a different badge. The statement adds that there have been 62 reported incidents in Australia, with no accidents or injuries resulting from this condition.
The company reports that an “improper” wire harness layout could cause the power steering harness to interfere with the cover of the driver’s knee airbag in Australian models.
Toyota Australia says that while there wouldn’t be any advance warning of the failure, an occurrence would see the driver notified of the problem with both a visual (dashboard) and audible warning. Parts for the recall – the power steering ECU and wiring harness – will arrive in Toyota dealerships from late next month, and owners will be individually informed by mail when the time is right to arrange for the auto to visit the dealership. Affected vehicle owners will receive a letter requesting that they make an appointment at their preferred dealer.
The fix work will take just over an hour and will be carried out free of charge.
Toyota 86 models from March 2015 onwards are unaffected because changes were introduced that overcame the potential issue. It is released as Subaru BRZ under the latter’s brand. This occurs when the rotation angle sensor of the vehicle’s electric power steering (EPS) wears over time and accumulates debris, oxidising the sensor and rendering it non-conductive.
