Toyota is to recall 6.5 million cars that have faulty window switches, the Japanese auto giant announced on Wednesday. Around 2.7 million vehicles have been affected in North America, 1.2 million in Europe, 6 lakh units in Japan and another 2 million units in other regions.

Among the vehicles involved in the recall includes the 2007 and 2009 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2009-2011 Corolla, 2008-2011 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2009-2011 Matrix, 2006-2011 RAV 4, 2009-2011 Sequoia, 2009-2011 Tundra, 2006-2010 Yaris, 2009-2011 Scion xB and the 2009-2010 Scion xD. Debris or moisture could enter the module, and that could lead to a short circuit, Toyota said. The scandal resulted in fines imposed on Toyota by US authorities.

The company will thoroughly examine every switch of affected vehicles and heat-resistant grease shall be applied. An internal circuit board may also need to be replaced.

The new recall, which affects different vehicles, has caused at least 11 incidents in which the switch or auto door burned, spokesman Scott Vazin said in an email. Other vehicles included in the recall were manufactured outside Japan from August 2005 to August 2006 and January 2009 to December 2010, the Tech Times reported.

Tokai Rika Co. was the supplier of the components in Toyota’s recall, according to Kayo Doi, a spokeswoman for Toyota. For more information, visit the Toyota Recall website.

The driver’s side switches on a few models have been found to malfunction if they did not receive enough grease during the manufacturing process.
