Track Santa LIVE on his world-wide flight that’s now underway
The number was for a crisis phone at Air Operations Center at Continental Air Defense Command, NORAD’s predecessor, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Col. Harry Shoup picked up.

On Dec. 24, Christmas Eve, NORAD tracks Santa’s progress across the globe, helping anxious boys and girls know when they should be tucked away in bed.
“Sometimes they just don’t know they’ve been naughty so I take all that into consideration and, generally I don’t make them lose any points for being a little bit naughty once or twice”, said Santa. Relieved, she informed him that she would be leaving him food by her fireplace, plus treats for his reindeer as well. “Is he near me?’ It’s very much magical”, said Campbell.
This was the 60th year of NORAD tracking Santa, and it all started with a wrong number in a SEARS add.
Created by a 1958 agreement between Canada and the United States, the North American Aerospace Defense Command [NORAD] is responsible for the aerospace and maritime defense of both countries.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced that he had approved an application by “Mr. Kris Kringle for special air transportation operating authority” to allow a reindeer-powered sleigh to traverse U.S. airspace after it was equipped with supplemental safety and navigation gear. Africa and Europe are next, followed by North America and South America.
Shoup studied the board. But, then again, Santa doesn’t want to deprive any child of the look in their eyes on Christmas morning when they see their presents. That’s 40 calls per volunteer per hour.

The military’s Santa-tracking efforts have become considerably more elaborate since 1955. That means Alaska is Santa’s second-to-last stop, with only Hawaii being farther west. “Ground based radar tracking sites relay global positioning updates to our elite fighter pilots, who often escort Santa’s sleigh through rough weather”. Staff at the command center fielded the calls and the operation grew over the years as military and personal technology got more sophisticated. A colonel realized he was getting a bunch of calls from kids asking about Santa, so he chose to play along.
