Trade unions strike: Mamata warns of stern action

The trade unions are also demanding compulsory registration of trade unions within a period of 45 days from the date of application and immediate rectification of International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions C-87 and C-98.
Claiming that the recent order of the Calcutta High Court which stated that there can not be any use of force either to break or to enforce a strike, the State leadership of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) said that verdict has provided them a “legal advantage”.
CITU leadership also cautioned the Chief Minister against “undemocratic use of the police and administration” to break the strike. “There was widespread vandalism to thwart the strike”, said Chakraborty. “We want the strike to be peaceful but if the State Government tries to break it by force, they will face stiff resistance”, warned Mr. Dasgupta.
Appealing to the people to report for duty tomorrow, she the government will pay compensation if anyone’s vehicle or shop is damaged during the strike.
A large number of state employees were present in their offices, defying the strike called by Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC).

Also on their charter of demands is revocation of ceilings on payment of bonus and provident fund and increase in the quantum of gratuity.
