Crews hope to open the road by Memorial Day each year, if weather permits. Eight miles of the 48-mile road are at that elevation or higher.
“Road crews and rangers will reassess conditions each morning and reopen the road when and if conditions allow”, Kyle Patterson with the National Park Service said in a statement.
Each year, plows start out in mid-April on the east and west sides of the road and work through drifts higher than 20 feet to meet in the middle.
Trail Ridge Road will not open as scheduled Friday.
However, due to melting snow on the road during the day and freezing temperatures at night, park officials advise that visitors should expect nightly closures at 8 p.m. each evening until conditions change.
