Trailer released for Oscar-tipped Manchester by the Sea
Set in MA, this very emotional drama stars Casey Affleck as an uncle who has to help take care of a teenage boy, played by Lucas Hedges, when his father suddenly dies. Now that the first trailer has been released, we can see for ourselves that Kenneth Lonergan has once more delivered a story that reaches in and touches the soul. Kyle Chandler also stars as the dead brother.

Casey Affleck, an ironclad lock for a Best Actor nomination here, plays a down-on-his-luck handyman suddenly forced to play guardian to his high-school-aged nephew (Lucas Hedges). A teenage boy who has now lost his father, is going through high school and dealing with girls and relationships, as well as an uncle who seemingly does not want to be his guardian and watch out for him. Manchester by the Sea takes a more humane approach, guided by Lonergan’s deep empathy for his characters. There are some amusing moments in the trailer for a film that looks like it could pack an emotional punch too.
This film may not be filled with sentimentality, if Casey Affleck’s persistence in finding someone else to care for his nephew is any indication, but it certainly looks like an emotionally charge, dramatic offering.

This third movie from Kenneth Lonergan (“You Can Count On Me”, “Margaret”) is also due to appear at worldwide film festivals in Toronto and NY in September, ahead of its U.S. release in November.
