Nine days earlier, one person died and 100 others were injured after a passenger train crashed into a terminal in Hoboken, New Jersey, a major commuter route from New York City’s western suburbs.

The FDNY said 76 people were injured, adding that all the injuries were non-life-threatening.
The derailment occurred on Track 6 of Atlantic Terminal, which services both the LIRR and New York’s MTA subway system. The Times quotes Cuomo as saying that the train in the Hoboken crash “was coming in much faster, did much more damage, hurt many more people”.
The worst injury is believed to be a broken leg, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a news conference Wednesday morning. The Federal Railroad Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are part of that probe. In fact, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), which runs the LIRR, gets sued so often that in 2009, the company delegated upwards of $1.5 billion dollars to bail them out.
“This is a relatively minor accident”, Cuomo said.
However, officials are asking similar questions in the Long Island Rail Road crash, such as why the engineer failed to stop the train. Windows were shattered and steel doors were bent at the station.
Eight freight cars derailed.
Over the last three years, there have been four crashes or derailments involving Metro-North, Long Island Railroad or New Jersey Transit Trains.

An investigation into that incident, in which the train entered the station at an unusually high speed, is ongoing. Other witnesses reported hearing a loud boom.
