“MTNL was in lack of Rs 2,900 crore loss in 2014”.
According to Prasad, mobile penetration in the country now stands at 100 crore and data penetration at 40 crore.
So far, the telecom firm has provided 500 hotspots in 200 places. 6,000 city surveillance cameras will also be installed at 1800 locations, in collaboration with the Mumbai Police in a shared revenue model.
Prasad noted that BSNL had recorded loss of Rs. 8,000 crores at the time he took over as the minister.
“But, today in five years BSNL has recorded operating profits of Rs 672 crore this year”.
Prasad said 4 lakh connections under Next Generation Network (NGN) will be made available in Maharashtra during 2016-17. On the other hand, mobile services providers say that multilayer local laws and high-cost installation of telecom towers lead to call drop menace. He said the responsibilities of the mobile operators do not end there; their main responsibility is to provide good service and for this the government is ready to take any strict actions. Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad hopes the initiative will help the administration reach its goal of having 50 crore internet users within the next 6 to 7 months.
“World is watching electronic manufacturing in India with great interest”, the minster added.
He also said that, as a part of “Digital India”, the government has planned to make “Digital Village” across the country, by linking all schemes with technology.
Speedy delivery of parcels is enabled through four dedicated mechanized nodal delivery centres encompassing 21 post offices in the city, with more slated to added, with deliveries on Sundays and holidays.
