No injuries have been reported.

By 5:40 p.m., fire officials said the fire was contained and no danger was apparent.

Officials said traffic is being diverted at Runway 12 at nearby Miami International Airport.

The substation was left charred, as well as a van parked next to it.

FPL reported that service had been restored to most of its customers, with about 3,500 still in the dark at 5 p.m. Miami-Dade Fire had the blaze under control by that time. About 10,000 customers were initially affected, but McGrath said the number later dropped to about 3,500 people now without electricity.

“We are working as hard as we can safely and as quickly as we possibly can to get the lights back on”, McGrath said.

Officers shut down Northwest 72nd Avenue in both directions, but the Palmetto Expressway remains open.

Traffic in the area was being detoured while firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.
