Transgender students allowed to use any bathroom at school

New York City’s action came a week after South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard vetoed a bill that would have made the state the first to limit transgender students to bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their birth gender.

Some students said this is a step in the right direction for our country, following the debate across the country. “The Mississippi Department of Education will adhere to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, as well as the joint guidance issued today by the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice”. “It’s not acceptable for what we need to do as a public school system”, said Shibler. In total, these schools serve an estimated 1.5 million students each year without any incidents of sexual harassment, assault, or inappropriate behavior as a result of allowing trans students to access bathrooms that align with their gender identity. The guidance was issued earlier by leaders of the federal Justice and Education departments.

A gender neutral sign is posted outside a bathrooms at a restaurant in Durham, North Carolina. Collins said his school district does not have a policy on transgender students using school bathrooms, although the issue has been discussed previously. North Carolina insists it has the right to pass whatever laws it wants.

In addition to the directive, the Education and Justice departments simultaneously warned schools against discriminating against transgender students. MS has enacted legislation similarly viewed as discriminatory by civil and gay rights groups, and Tennessee and Missouri considered similar measures.

As conservatives raged Friday against the Obama directive, Trump said the issue should be settled by the states and told the cable news program “Fox & Friends” that he doesn’t have an opinion on whether boys should be allowed to use girls’ rooms, calling it a “new issue” that he doesn’t yet have an opinion on.

Hampton says the division will comply the federal government.

According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, the number of transgender people in the United States is unknown – in part because many are not public about their identity. “Now, both the federal courts and the U.S. Congress must intercede to stop this massive executive branch overreach, which clearly oversteps constitutional authority”.

Title IX was meant to protect women and girls from harassment and discrimination, to ensure that they received equal opportunities in education, and now the Obama administration is re-writing it to say schools must allow boys unfettered access to the girls locker rooms.

“I spoke about how we are taking a stand against liberals” attempts to let boys into girls’ restrooms”, he added in a post to his Facebook page. “Well, in Texas, he can keep his 30 pieces of silver”, referring to the story of what Judas was paid to betray Jesus Christ, according to the Christian Bible.

One of Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and the rest of his office’s favorite pastimes is to pretend Texas can pay for itself, thank you very much, without the federal government’s help. “We will not sell out our children to the federal government”.

The Obama administration’s new public school guidance is not federal law, but carries significant weight given the federal dollars attached to schools’ compliance.

The federal guidance may portend more court fights over transgender bathroom access.

Overall, Americans broadly agree with the seniors, but three-fourths favor laws guaranteeing equal protection for transgender people.

When it comes to athletics, the Obama directives are confusingly vague, telling schools that they may not “rely on overly broad generalizations or stereotypes about the differences between transgender students and other students of the same sex (i.e., the same gender identity) or others’ discomfort with transgender students”.

The Obama Administration ordered public schools to let transgender students use bathrooms and locker rooms that match their current gender identity
