On December 14, 15 and 16 the third round of technical talks on civil aviation between delegations from Cuba and the United States, including the establishment of scheduled flights between both countries, was held in Washington. American visits are authorized in 12 categories, such as cultural exchanges, humanitarian, or for “people-to-people” trips that encourage communication between the USA and Cuban citizens.
He says the USA still has differences with Cuba, including on human rights, and will keep raising those issues.
Booking a trek to Cuba is going to get a ton less demanding.
Thomas Engle is the deputy assistant secretary for transportation affairs and he tells The Associated Press that the deal struck by the two countries Wednesday allows 20 flight a day to Havana and 10 to other cities.
While US officials still oppose Cuba’s lack of political rights, Obama concluded these goals could be better served through engagement.
News of the agreement comes a year after Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro announced the nations were restoring formal diplomatic relations that were severed shortly after communist leader Fidel Castro overthrew the island’s longtime dictator in 1959.
The resuming of scheduled air travel is the latest step to normalize ties between the two countries, interrupted since 1961. The diplomatic advance is said to be the biggest step toward tighter economic ties since the two countries began normalizing relations past year.
USA officials and aviation executives have speculated that Cuba could allow more than a dozen flights to and from the US a day.
“In the past year, the two countries have forged agreements on combating narco-trafficking, preserving the environment and reestablishing direct mail”.
American Airlines is ready to take off.
Once-fierce foes the United States and Cuba have agreed to restore scheduled commercial flights for the first time in more than five decades.
