Travel Farther with Star Trek Beyond

With a very, very impressive 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Paramount Pictures has put out a quartet of Star Trek Beyond television spots filled with overwhelmingly positive pull-quotes from film critics. It is legitimately terrifying, as well as thrilling, and it’s when we meet our villain, Krall (Idris Elba). The Enterprise team must use their wits, fists and lasers to take out this new enemy with a score to settle with the rest of the galaxy.
They certainly didn’t “boldly go where no man has gone before” in this third movie in the rebooted franchise because there are few surprises and nothing that rises to the level of a revelation in this installment.

Wednesday night was bittersweet for the Star Trek Beyond cast as they gathered for the film’s Comic-Con premiere without co-star Anton Yelchin, who died in a tragic accident one month ago. This sequel chooses just to have a simple premise of the good guys taking out the bad guys instead.
One innovation in “Star Trek Beyond” involves the sexuality of helmsman Sulu, originally played by George Takei, who is now a noted gay activist.
But Star Trek Beyond, scripted by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, operates at warp speed throughout and is dominated by ho-hum action to a counterproductive degree. “I thought it would be interesting to explore the existential issues that would come up from travelling through space, even with great adventures”, he says.
In fairness to Lin, this is exactly the sort of movie he was tasked with directing.
Another nice thing about this movie is how it seemed to not only be a nod to the original in so many ways, with a lot of little winks and nods…and also the Gene Roddenberry vision of diversity.
Another “Star Trek Beyond” movie marathon will be held at GV Plaza on Saturday, 23 July, starting with “Star Trek” at 1pm, followed by “Star Trek Into Darkness” at 3.40pm, and “Star Trek Beyond” at 6.20pm. They hired Justin Lin, the director most known for the “Fast and the Furious” movies.
Before the extravaganza commenced, the cast and crew memorialized the late “Trek” stars Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin, who died June 19.
Q: Does Bones have more to do in Star Trek Beyond? When you watch that film, it is pretty much like a submarine drama, in the same way that [classic TOS episode] “Balance of Terror” was. Yes, tomorrow Star Trek Beyond will be on the big screens and going to hit the box office.

Much more amusing is a can-do alien named Jaylah, engagingly played under kabuki-style makeup by Sofia Boutella, soon to play the title character in “The Mummy” opposite Tom Cruise. But it’s still fun, you still care about the people, and the effects manage to look a little more elegant and interesting than the usual blue blasts of generica.
