In Miami, where two neighborhoods have been put on Zika alert – the north Miami neighborhood of Wynwood and a section of Miami Beach – the number of locally-acquired Zika cases is now at 42, according to Tuesday’s Tampa Bay Times. Officials are looking into the possibility that the Pinellas County resident was infected with the virus in a neighboring county.
As for the new case in Palm Beach County, Scott said he believed it was not related to an earlier non-travel related case announced earlier in the same county.
Georgia Southern University Student Health Services received notification today that a person has tested positive for Zika virus in Bulloch County.

“It is particularly important to protect pregnant women, or those who plan to become pregnant, from contracting the Zika virus, because Zika may cause developmental problems in the baby during pregnancy”.
Among the area residents was 32-year-old jogger Jen Cheek, who said health workers told her they would respond by email to her inquiries about the speed of the virus’ spread across Florida.
During the discussion, Scott urged Floridians to remove standing water from homes and businesses, a practice that officials say will slow down the transmission of Zika virus.
Rick Scott lauded the state’s “very good coordination” with the Miami-Dade County health department.
“These are individual instances, and do not represent spread throughout the area”, Frieden said.
No local cases of Zika in Broward have been reported as of yet. Nine of those cases are in the Tampa Bay area. Sexual transmission is one documented means of person-to-person transmission. “That’s what we would anticipate seeing here”.
Today’s announcement raises the number of cases of locally transmitted Zika infection to 43. State officials won’t identify what part of the county is being targeted. This study confirms fears that the babies with Zika may be more severely impacted. Until now, those travel warnings were limited to foreign countries and U.S. territories, such as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
“There is an urgent need to identify therapeutic approaches to halt Zika infection, especially in pregnant women”, said Marco Onorati, co-first author of the paper, in the release.
For state and local government officials – who have already been accused of trying to use the outbreak to score political points – it’s a sobering thought that the virus could harm more children than previously thought. “We will have a few hundred infections at most”. “That includes funds to purchase the other products they might want in a Zika prevention kit”, he said.
Use air conditioning or make sure doors and windows are screened to keep mosquitoes outside. It is transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
