Trevor Noah begins tenure on ‘The Daily Show’ on Monday

The debut continues a period of transition in the hotly competitive late-night television arena. At least Noah’s presence will shake up the series’ tried-and-true format of finding the punchline in political news stories.

“So they will watch – or not, because my mom, she always says, “I get my amusing from you personally, so I have no time for these ‘shared” shows.’ She doesn’t want to share me with anybody”. At 31, he’s young and has enormous confidence. Thus far we have no evidence that Noah cares about getting his audience not just to laugh, but also to think.

There will be some changes on the show though. Same theme music, same set with small adjustments. He did a host of weird and not-unpleasantly discomfiting voices, including a bit where crack bragged to meth about killing Whitney Houston. Noah has said that the new Daily Show will have a similar look to the Stewart show, but with some updated technology. That is something that the network realizes and blesses him in his endeavor to leave the channel oriented news reporting and criticism. “Which is not ideal”.

Answering why a woman or even an American didn’t get the gig, Trevor – a South African comedian – joked that this was just another job that went to an immigrant.

These are the two most likely contenders; both happened as he was riffing about House Speaker John Boehner’s resignation.

The host, who is South African-born, relates America’s struggle with race relations and fight for democracy to his own country’s. In fact the pace of the show was breathtakingly speedy for a reboot. Stewart won more than 20 Emmy awards. In the second, Roy Wood Jr. stole the show as Senior Mars Correspondent. Definitely. But in an interview with Vulture, Noah is definitely trying to play it cool ahead of his first show tonight.

Late-night TV has also become a favored spot on the presidential campaign trail. Maybe hopefully one day there will be a comedy show that’s figured it out and say, “Here’s your answer”, but until then I think definitely Adult Swim comes closest.

While Stewart was more of a left-leaning host politically, Noah does not have a particular stance either way. Jimmy Fallon is still doing juvenile pop-culture jokes and skits on NBC and Jimmy Kimmel on ABC seems to be biding his time with a response to the arrival of Colbert. In his comedy routines he talks about how he wasn’t allowed to walk on the same sidewalk as his father because of the color of his skin.

“The show is a few days away from premiering”.

The Daily Show is sensibly in same-as-it-ever-was mode with Noah at the helm.

Noah does know one thing for sure: he’s not coming off 17 years at the same job, as Jon Stewart was.
