South-central Idaho students who made the cut are: Sophia Coplin at Wood River High School in Hailey, Nathaniel Nordquist at Jerome High School and Kathryn Clark at Twin Falls High School.
About $1.6 million juniors entered the scholarship by taking the Preliminary SAT past year.
The following students at Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook were named semifinalists: Rishabh Arora, Daniels S. Ben-Isvy, Brian J. Burke, Byron Chin, Emily Chwa, Nicholas L. Fahrney, Nathan D. Fong, Michael Joshua C. Gonzalez, Sarah Jiang, Grant Kim, Matthew L. Landauer, Daniel Lee, So Hyun Lee, Alana Levin, Christina M. Li, Manisha Singam, Kimberly S. Siu, Benjamin S. Zhao. To ensure that academically talented young people from all parts of the United States are included in this talent pool, Semifinalists are designated on a state-representational basis. The number is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a not-for-profit, will dole out some 7,500 scholarships in spring 2017.

Each Semifinalist will be asked to submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes writing an essay and providing information about extracurricular activities, awards, and leadership positions. Winners are selected based on their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. There will also be about 1,000 corporate-sponsored scholarships and another 4,000 scholarships sponsored by 190 colleges and universities where the students will attend.
