Tribunal lets Russia’s Klishina back into Rio Games

Russian Federation s sports minister on Monday welcomed a court decision to overturn a last-minute ban against long jumper Darya Klishina from taking part in the Rio Olympics.

Darya Klishina, 25, initially escaped a blanket ban on Russia’s athletes for doping by governing body the IAAF, but her eligibility was revoked following new, but unspecified, information.

“The Court of Arbitration for Sport set aside the IAAF decision and confirmed that I am a clean athlete who remains eligible to compete under IAAF rules in the Olympic Games and other global competitions”.

The rest of Russia’s track-and-field athletes were banned from the Olympics by CAS last month.

“The athlete complied with the relevant criteria because of her permanent residence outside Russian Federation, still applied despite the additional information provided by Professor McLaren”.

But in the early hours of Monday, CAS issued a statement saying the Russian’s appeal against suspension had been upheld.

“The athlete established that she was subject to fully compliant drug testing, in and out of competition, outside of Russia”, CAS said in a statement.

Darya Klishina attended the court hearing on Sunday and then trained at a track near the Olympic Stadium on Sunday night, while awaiting the court’s final decision.

Unlike in previous legal battles over Russian doping, the Russian Sports Ministry and the country’s Olympic committee have taken a back seat in Klishina’s case, with her American management company in a leading role.

Klishina could not control what happened to her doping probes in the laboratory, her lawyer added.

“We instigated a review process following new evidence presented to us”, said the IAAF in response.

Klishina expressed her relief in a post on Facebook, and said she was relieved to only have the long jump competition to focus on.
