Today sports journalists across the country have taken to social media to share their condolences.

Tributes are flowing following the death of award-winning sports journalist and broadcaster Mike Gibson at the age of 75.

“Mike had a wonderful turn of phrase and his passion for sport and for Rugby League was always clear”, Mr Greenberg said.

The veteran sports journalist was known for hosting Fox Sport’s popular Back Page program, where he worked alongside comedian Billy Birmingham for 16 years before he retired in 2012.

“Can’t believe we’ve lost the great Mike Gibson“.

Our thoughts are with Mike’s family and friends at this sad time. A truly wonderful writer and storyteller and a source of huge encouragement to young journalists like me. A great of [sic] sports journalism. A great of sports journalism.

Gibson recorded 720 episodes as the show’s host – missing only one during his tenure.

He later moved to Fox Sports where he presented The Back Page. “WWOS. Back Page. Vale, Mike”, Tweeted Peter Fitzimons.
