Trooper fatally shot while assisting driver

The good Samaritan who helped capture a man accused of shooting a state trooper said Monday that he was first warned off by bystanders but charged up anyway to try to help the trooper in distress.

As the trooper tried to coax Daigle out of his stalled auto so he could make an arrest, the driver pulled out his weapon and shot Vincent twice in the head, authorities said.

Police video showed Vincent, a 13-year state police veteran in southwest Louisiana and member of a law enforcement family, very professionally trying to talk a man out of the vehicle stuck sideways in a ditch, Edmonson said during a news conference Sunday.

He said the tape shows the shotgun blast.

“We are investigating this as a homicide”, Mancuso said.

Vincent is survived by his wife and 9-year-old son.

Investigators said he made contact with Daigle, 54, who was the only person inside the truck. Authorities have not formally filed charges but a murder charge is expected following Vincent’s death.

The owner of the truck that Kevin Daigle was driving Sunday was found deceased in his Moss Bluff home Monday.

‘You could hear him breathing, telling him, ‘You’re lucky. “You’re going to die soon”, Louisiana State Police Colonel Michael Edmonson told reporters on Sunday.

Vincent, 43, was killed after state police say a man who appeared to be stranded on the side of the road fired a bullet at the officer’s head from a sawed-off shotgun.

Vincent, a 13-year-veteran of the state police force, was airlifted to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, where a 10:30 a.m. news conference will be held.

On Monday, August 24, 2015, Trooper Vincent succumbed to his injuries and passed away. “Troopers bravely embark each day across the state to serve and protect the citizens of Louisiana while fully realizing the inherent dangers of our solemn vow to public safety”.

The passers-by also gave aid to Vincent. He also “continued to keep giving in death” with the Monday donation of his organs, Edmonson said.

Col. Mike Edmonson says Senior Trooper Steven Vincent was a runner who ran a marathon the night before his death, just for fun – and told a colleague he couldn’t wait to see how his body reacted to chicken and a biscuit. James Anderson said Monday. One brother, Keith Vincent, is the Chief of Police in Iowa and another brother, Terrell Vincent, is a fellow state trooper.
