Troopers: Multiple deaths; injuries after bus hits overpass

A charter bus wreck killed four people and injured dozens from a SC football squad and closed U.S. 74/I-74 in Richmond County on Saturday afternoon, according to officials and media reports.

The bus hit an overpass column on USA 74 Bypass near N.C. 177 at about 3:20 p.m., multiple media outlets reported.

Four people were declared dead, and the remaining injured were taken to four hospitals in the area: Sand Hill Regional Medical Center, First Health-Richmond, First Health-Moore, and Scotland Memorial Hospital, Gordon said.

The bus reportedly struck an overpass bridge near mile marker 316 in Richmond County.

They were headed to Fayetteville, N.C.to play the University of God’s Chosen in a football game that was scheduled for Saturday night.

The passengers on the bus were a Rock Hill football team. Images from the scene showed the bus stopped in the median with significant damage to the left side of the bus.

WBTV in Charlotte reported that more than one person died and that there were 40 to 50 injuries in the bus crash, which involved a football team, and happened when a front tire on the bus failed.
