Troops deployed in Brazil to warn about Zika virus risks

It has confirmed three deaths linked to the virus.

Much remains unknown about Zika, but the virus has been linked to thousands of cases of birth defects in Latin America, and the World Health Organization has declared an global public health emergency. It does not cause serious complications in adults, but is suspected of leading to severe brain defects and microcephaly cases in newborn children.

“There have been no locally acquired Zika cases in the U.S. or Hawaii, and we’d like to keep it that way”, said Mr Ige.

“The war depends on us”, she said, accompanied by officials, health workers and a swarm of journalists.

The Aedes aegypti mosquito lives largely indoors and lays eggs in stagnant water.

The scare over Zika has been heightened by warnings from the Pan American Health Organization that in a few cases the virus could have been sexually transmitted.
