Troops in Kashmir to foil infiltration bids, says Parrikar

The Chief of the Army staff, visited the Gajraj Corps at Tezpur, as part of his visits to various formations of the Army to review their operational readiness and internal security situation. He was accompanied by the Northern Army Commander Lt Gen DS Hooda and the Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen Satish Dua.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said the deployment of troops in J&K was meant for foiling infiltration bids and it has nothing to do with the protests in the Kashmir Valley which started after the killing of a militant Burhan Wani in an encounter on July 8.

Army chief General Dalbir Singh on Friday reviewed the security situation in the Kashmir Valley, especially in the four worst affected districts in south Kashmir.

General Suhag directed all ranks of Chinar Corps, which looks after the Valley, to ensure strict vigil along the LoC.

The Army Chief held a high-level meeting with his top commanders to take stock of the situation, according to official sources.

Meanwhile, curfew was re-imposed on Friday in many parts of Kashmir Valley as the unrest is unabated and in view of an appeal issued by an alliance of key separatist leaders asking people to hold protests and sit-ins.

He also tweeted to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena scion Aaditya Thackeray and said that he would meet them in person and discuss the issue. In fresh clashes reported from a few areas of Srinagar including Hazratbal and at various places in Baramulla, Pulwama and Bandipore districts more than two dozen people were injured, police sources said.
