Tropical storm could form August 1; projections are for a southerly path

Radar at 8:16 p.m. indicated brief periods of heavy rain across windward Oahu, particularly between Kahuku and Kaaawa, with rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

It will not have a direct impact on Brevard County.

Andy Lahr, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, said the disturbance is expected to move into the southern Gulf of Mexico as it continues its westerly track.

If Earl indeed develops, this would be the first named storm in the Atlantic basin since Tropical Storm Danielle back in June.

The hurricane center’s five-day outlook takes the storm south of Hispaniola and Cuba and across Belize and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Honduras issued a tropical storm warning for the entire north coast of the country. That fast forward movement in combination with dry air helped limit its development potential late last week and over the weekend.

Other than maybe an increase in tropical moisture from the proximity of the system, which many Floridians would welcome, Invest 97 is no threat to the State of Florida.

WFTV’s Rusty McCraine explained, “The tropical wave looks very impressive this morning, and we have observations of tropical storm force winds on the northern and eastern side”. That allowed an area of surface low pressure to finally form early Tuesday, and the NHC declared that Tropical Storm Earl had formed.
