Tropical Storm Danny expected to strengthen in the Atlantic

It will move toward the west at 15 miles per hour over the next several days.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday the US Virgin Islands Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs (DLCA) reminded local businesses of their obligation to submit a hurricane price list.

Earlier this month, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration revised its predictions for hurricane activity downward, ahead of what are traditionally the two busiest months of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Danny is forecast to become the first hurricane of the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season by Thursday afternoon.

This disturbance may continue to organize into a tropical depression or storm as it closes in on the Lesser Antillies.

“The global and regional models remain in good agreement on Danny moving west-northwestward toward a weakness in the subtropical ridge”, the NHC said.

However, forecasters predict the depression will strengthen into Tropical Storm Danny by Tuesday evening or Wednesday, and could be a Category 1 hurricane by Friday.

But this is a great reminder that we are entering the peak of hurricane season and you should already have a plan in place should a storm threaten our area. Dry air in the middle levels of the atmosphere from dust storms moving off the west coast of Africa is forecast to potentially inhibit further strengthening in three to five days. This storm is more than 3500 miles out in the Atlantic and for now lets just sit back and watch.

Unlike previous Atlantic systems this season that have been cut down by strong westerly wind shear, Sunday’s storm formed underneath that flow.
