The upgrade to major hurricane status comes after NOAA reconnaissance aircraft measured sufficient winds within the eye-wall of Danny.

Danny could strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane with 100 mph within 96 hours. She said due to the distance, uncertainties in the weather and two fronts moving in, there’s no way to foresee any impacts from either the depression or the tropical storm it may form. Indeed, some models like the HWRF shows this becoming a potent hurricane, a season first if it came to fruition. Hurricane season ends on November 30th officially which means we are in the heart of the season right now. Forecasters said the storm was moving about 12 mph – giving forecasters plenty of time to track its progress – with tropical storm force winds extending 45 miles.

Invest 96L rolled off the coast of Africa this weekend and is trying to keep itself together several hundred miles southwest of the Cape Verde Islands.

As of 5 p.m., the center of Danny was centered at 10.9 N, 37.5 W, or 1595 miles east of the Windward Islands. Remember it only takes one storm to make a season memorable so don’t let your guard down just yet.

“Atmospheric and oceanic conditions surrounding Danny are expected to be favorable for slow but steady strengthening throughout the forecast period”, according to the forecast. It would be named Danny.

A Category 3 or higher is considered a major hurricane.
