Tropical Storm Hermine Moves North

Hermine’s stiff winds and unsafe rip currents threatened eastern Massachusetts Monday, while cruise ship passengers were reeling from a wild ride in rough seas.

A tropical storm warning remained in effect on Monday from the eastern end of New York’s Long Island and to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Island off Cape Cod in MA.

The Weather Channel said this morning that the winds from Hermine, now a post-tropical cyclone, are expected to subside, but near the coast there could continue to be gusts as high as 50 miles per hour throughout the day today. There has been significant oceanfront beach erosion in New Jersey.

“People from NY and New Jersey are kind of stuck here (during bad weather), so they can still come”, if forecasts don’t play out as predicted, Khan said.

Its strongest winds were extending outward by about 230 miles, short of USA shores.

In the ship’s restaurants, dishes were “going all over the place”, Beidermann said.

A handful of people came out to the beach near the famous Steel Pier amusement park, mostly to look at the rough seas. “Half the ship is in the room right now over the toilet”, Beidermann said.

The bunker was at a level 2 partial activation Monday morning. Hermine’s wind and rain pelted the coast of SC and North Carolina.

Still, the Island saw several hundred power outages Tuesday morning associated with the storm.

Environment officials say Maritimers should brace themselves for blustery weather during the first week of school, as post-tropical storm Hermine makes it way up the East Coast.

“[The storm] scared a lot of people off, they didn’t want to be here and get trapped on the island”, Copley said.

A beachgoer stands at the edge of the water, Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, in Bridgehampton, N.Y., on the southeastern shore of Long Island, where the effects of storm system Hermine could be seen in the rough surf and a ban on swim.

At 8 a.m., Hermine was throttling a region located 295 miles east-southeast of Ocean City, Md., still carrying maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Just because it’s a post-tropical cyclone doesn’t mean the impact of tropical-force winds, winds in general and storm surge go away.

It was forecast to be in a good environment for development as it moves to the west-northwest into the central Atlantic, and the hurricane center said a tropical depression could form by the weekend.

The Fairfield County shoreline does have a coastal flood advisory for high tides that are forecast to be about two feet above normal.

The biggest impact of Hermine was the shuttering of public swimming areas on the popular Labor Day weekend. Anthony Kourmoulakis’ truck was severely damaged in James Island, South Carolina, when a tree fell.

The hurricane center said Hermine was still generating large waves and rough seas along the East Coast, as well as unsafe rip currents.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency Saturday for Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties.
