That large reach and slow motion could cause “a long duration of hazardous conditions along much of the mid-Atlantic coast extending into southern New England through the holiday weekend and into midweek”, the hurricane center said.
Hermine will continue to twist hundreds of miles off shore in the Atlantic Ocean and keep swimmers and surfers out of beach waters because of its unsafe waves and rip currents on the last day of the long holiday weekend.
Post-tropical Cyclone Hermine took an unexpected veer east, which means that some of the worst of the rains and winds could happen out to sea if it continues on its trajectory.
Post-Tropical Storm Hermine will have an impact on the weather in CT as we kick off the first full week of September.
Hermine, the first hurricane to make landfall in Florida in 11 years, swept ashore on Friday near the town of St. Marks with winds of 80 miles per hour (129 kph), knocking out power for 300,000 Florida homes and businesses.
Despite the tropical storm not making landfall on New York City, it could still hit it with high winds and the public beaches remained closed on Labor Day.
The Jersey Shore could see major beach erosion and periods of moderate to major flooding by Sunday night’s high tide and into Monday morning, according to the advisory.
“Don’t be lulled by the nice weather”, Christie said, referring to the bright sunny skies along the Jersey Shore on Sunday. The eastern track means a less severe impact, but you’re still going to see beach erosion, storm surges and risky rip currents. “It is during this time period that we expect the most significant impacts from Hermine along the Northeast coastline.Life-threatening storm surge is expected within the next 36 hours from Virginia to Sandy Hook, New Jersey”.
Hermine is forecast to return to the Category 1 hurricane strength it lost as it pummelled Florida.
High winds tipped over this18-wheeler, killing its driver and shutting down the US64 bridge in North Carolina. But most people were cleaning up trees and branches felled by the storm.
In Virginia Beach, Virginia, Seth Broudy, 45, owner of the Seth Broudy School of Surf, said high winds and tides flooded parking lots by his home on Saturday.
Pennsylvania State University geosciences professor Michael Mann told the Guardian, “We are already experiencing more and more flooding due to climate change in every storm”.
“I don’t think it’s necessary”, he said. In Florida, a homeless man was struck and killed by a falling tree south of Gainesville, according to Gov. Rick Scott.
