It was moving to the west at 5 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center said.

The northeast region of the United States, including New York City, will get “drenched” from “fire-hose precipitation”, Nashua-based Hometown Forecast Services Incorporated meteorologist Rob Carolan told Bloomberg. “Confidence in the details of the track forecast, especially beyond 48 hours, is extremely low”.

The Jersey shore is already in preparation for Tropical Storm Joaquin, preparing for potential flooding as heavy rains are in the forecast.

Tropical Storm Joaquin formed in the Atlantic this weekend, becoming the 10th named storm of the season.

NASA’s RapidScat instrument showed that Tropical Storm Marty’s strongest sustained winds were north and east of the center near 35 meters per second (78 mph/126 kph) and weaker winds around the rest of the storm. For now, at least, the National Hurricane Center favors the latter scenario, but with “low confidence”.

National Hurricane Center forecasters on Tuesday were keeping their eye on a slow-moving tropical storm after forecast models projected the storm would move close to the Bahamas.

It was located about 425 miles (680 km) east-northeast of the northwestern Bahamas on Tuesday, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (73 kph), the Miami-based NHC said.

Rainfall totals from late Thursday into early Sunday could reach 2-3 inches, with higher amounts predicted farther east and north, Ross said.

Tropical Storm Niala in the Central Pacific is passing well away from the Hawaiian Islands and is rapidly weakening as it tracks west-southwest over open ocean. Joaquin seems to pose no threat to the eastern Atlantic states at this time and no coastal watches or warnings have been posted.

Heavy rains from additional weather systems impacting the same area are expected to fall through Wednesday. Rains from Marty could lead to flash floods in Mexico, the hurricane center said. Minor to moderate coastal flooding is possible later this week.
