Tropical storm Newton forms off Mexico Pacific coast

Newton is expected to make landfall on the southern tip of Baja California on Tuesday morning, according to the U.S.

“On the forecast track, Newton should be near or over the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula on Tuesday morning, and move over portions of the southern Baja California peninsula late Tuesday and Wednesday”, the National Hurricane Center said in a Monday morning advisory.

A hurricane watch has been issued for Baja California Sur, from Cabo San Lazaro to San Evaristo, including Cabo San Lucas.

As of Monday morning, the storm was centred about 520 kilometres southeast of Cabo San Lucas, with maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h. A Tropical Storm Watch has also been issued for the west coast of mainland Mexico from Mazatlan to Huatabampito.SUMMARY OF WATCHES AND WARNINGS IN EFFECT:A Hurricane Warning is in effect for. Maximum sustained winds had increased to 60 miles per hour (95 kph) and the center said it was likely to reach hurricane force before hitting land near the Los Cabos resorts at the tip of the peninsula on Tuesday morning. With as much as 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain expected to fall in coastal areas, the downpours “could produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in areas of mountainous terrain”, the NHC warned.
