Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect on the North Fork Monday

Hermine spun away from the East Coast on Sunday, removing the threat of heavy rain but maintaining enough power to whip up.

Because of concerns about rough seas, unsafe surf and strong storm surge, no swimming was allowed on NY beaches Sunday and Monday. Winds along the south coast will be a bit stronger than anywhere else.

As of 5 a.m. today, Hermine’s top sustained winds were steady at 70 miles per hour as it moved north at 3 miles per hour.

On the forecast track, the center of Hermine will meander slowly offshore of the New England coast through Tuesday. Strong winds also were expected throughout the day, with sustained winds of about 20 to 30 miles per hour and gusts reaching as high as 40 miles per hour.

The winds from Post Tropical Storm Hermine are expected to get stronger as the day goes on, Meteorologist Mike Cameron said on Monday.

Governors along the Eastern Seaboard announced emergency preparations.

New York City planned to close its beaches Monday because of rip currents, and the ban could extend into Tuesday, depending on weather conditions, officials said.

“It was a little overhyped by the media”, said Andrew Thulin, assistant general manager of Daddy O Hotel Restaurant in the New Jersey township of Long Beach. Instead, Delaware should brace for another round of hot-and-dry weather, with temperatures climbing to at least the high 80s Tuesday and above 90 Wednesday.

The waves eroded some of the shore, creating sand dune cliffs where kids climbed. And the surf remains rough.

“People from NY and New Jersey are kind of stuck here (during bad weather), so they can still come”, if forecasts don’t play out as predicted, Khan said.

The storm – which hit Florida as a Category One hurricane on Friday – was forecast to slam the city with tropical storm conditions for several days starting Sunday.

The storm has caused two deaths, inflicted widespread property damage and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people from Florida to Virginia.

Since sea levels have risen to a foot because of global warming, the storm surges pushed by Hermine could be even more damaging, climate scientists say.

The weather service is predicting Cape Cod could get as much as 1 or 2 inches of rain from the storm’s outer bands, but the rest of Eastern Massachusetts shouldn’t get more than an inch. “And it’s only the beginning”.

In New Jersey, big waves and churning surf up to the base of dunes were reported in some areas of the state hit hard by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012, including the Ocean County communities of Point Pleasant Beach, Bay Head, Mantoloking and Brick.

Hermine may not have rained on the city’s Labor Day Parade as predicted, but the storm is still bringing high winds and risky rip tides to the city, officials said.

Earlier in Florida, a homeless man died from a falling tree.

Hermine picked up speed as it marched toward the East Coast ruining the holiday weekend for some as it closed
