Tropical storm warning still in effect as Hermine moves more northwest

When Hermine ripped into St. Marks in Florida’s Big Bend region just before 2 a.m. Friday, it became the first hurricane to come ashore in the state since Wilma struck 11 years ago.

A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for southern MA and Rhode Island.

The good news is rainfall in New Jersey and DE is expected to be only between 1 and 3 inches.

On Monday evening, Chief Meteorologist Bruce DePrest said part of New London saw a 54 miles per hour gust of wind, and the surrounding areas were seeing some gusty winds as well. The eastern track means a less severe impact, but you’re still going to see beach erosion, storm surges and risky rip currents.

“Don’t be lulled by the nice weather”, Christie said, referring to the bright sunny skies along the Jersey Shore on Sunday afternoon.

Despite the tropical storm not making landfall on New York City, it could still hit it with high winds and the public beaches remained closed on Labor Day.

Having passed over North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the powerful and risky Hermine storm, which has claimed at least two lives in Florida and North Carolina, shook the U.S. Middle Atlantic Coast early Sunday, leading to high winds, heavy rains and surging seas and drawing nearer to NY and New Jersey.

Coast Guard crews were searching off the coast of Long Island for two fishermen who slipped into choppy waters off the coast of Wading River, on the eastern part of the island.

Swimmers were ordered out of the surf in NY and New Jersey. The Island Queen canceled service between Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard Sunday through Monday. “While this storm will likely not be almost as large as Superstorm Sandy, you don’t need a storm as large as Sandy to be destructive”.

High winds tipped over this18-wheeler, killing its driver and shutting down the US64 bridge in North Carolina.

Hermine had already struck Florida, North Carolina and Virginia hard during its journey to the Northeast, which began Friday.

Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency Saturday for the coastal counties of Ocean, Atlantic, and Cape May. In Florida, a homeless man in Marion County was hit by a falling tree and was killed.
