Troubled Pro Bowl LB Aldon Smith released by 49ers following latest arrest

This time, it’s unclear when and if he can recover.

San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke said Tuesday night that the 49ers had been planning to sign the linebacker beyond this season despite his troubled past. Safety Eric Reid said in light of Smith’s previous problems, it seemed like he was doing better. “We’ve got to keep rolling. You know what? We learn from mistakes, if he’s willing to learn from mistakes”, Haley said.

“It’s a sad day”.

Smith was scheduled to make $9.754 million this season when the 49ers picked up his fifth-year option. He missed five games that season as he entered a treatment program for substance abuse.

After Friday’s practice, players said whoever takes over Aldon Smith’s position is going to have big shoes to fill on the field. Smith also forced six fumbles, while nabbing a lone interception in 2012. At the police department they processed Mr. Smith and then he was later transported to Santa Clara County Jail. He later returned to and was contacted by officers. The two became friends as part of the 2011 draft class, and Miller credited Smith with helping get through his suspension.

“He will not have to walk this path alone”, Tomsula repeated. “Justice will be served, the truth will come out, there’s no DUI”, he told KGO in San Francisco. Head coach Tomsula weighed in on Smith’s progress by saying, “He has been turning his life around, he is in that process”. Smith had 19.5 sacks in 2012, was the fastest player in NFL history to reach 30 sacks, and holds the NFL record for most sacks in first two seasons (33.5). We’re friends before anything else. “If I have to leave tonight before the (Hall of Fame) ceremony (Saturday), if he needs me I’ll go”. He was there for me.

“Do I know him?”

September 2013: Smith was arrested and charged with DUI again after a vehicle accident.

So, imagine the shock during the off-season when Smith was arrested again at Los Angeles worldwide Airport for falsely reporting he had a bomb. However, no charges were filed in that incident.

Smith was arrested on suspicion of DUI in January of 2012, although the charge was later reduced to reckless driving. For the 49ers, that was the last straw in a very productive pro career filled with off-the-field issues. If you asked them, I think they’d say the same thing. “Go get it. You’re worth it. There’s a value in every human being”.
