Truck dumps 50000 pounds of raw potatoes, closing down road

A portion of Interstate 77 in Charlotte will be closed for much of Friday morning due to a tractor-trailer crash that spilled thousands of potatoes across the roadway, according to WSOC.

A truck driver fell asleep at the wheel around 2 a.m., hitting a concrete barrier and wrecking the tractor-trailer he was driving, reports WBTV.

State Highway Patrol Officer John Burgin said the driver did not suffer any serious injuries but would likely face a minor traffic charge for failing to control the vehicle. His cargo, however, remained scattered across the highway, much of it mixed with diesel fuel from the crash, creating an inedible and dangerously flammable mess.

We’ll keep following this as the road reopens. He’s now being treated, but it’s unclear what his status is. Many people were stung, and one officer became trapped in his cruiser when they swarmed the entirety of his auto.

Officials expect the road to be re-opened at around 9 a.m.
