Mutual aid from surrounding emergency crews has been asked for and Middlesex County Hazardous Material units are on the scene.

A truck fire has shut down part of the New Jersey Turnpike in East Brunswick.

The six-lane turnpike has a steel barrier in the middle, and one of the trucks driving about 20 metres in front of him scraped it, releasing sparks, Mr Byrne said. “Multiple explosions” were reported by N.Jerzy Fire Alert and can also be heard in videos shared on social media.

Amazingly, the drivers of both trucks suffered just minor injuries.

Local roads were impacted, as in addition to Sherry Road, the Sullivan Way overpass was closed, and traffic was heavy on University Road.

The Port Authority confirmed via Twitter that the fire was south of Exit 9. We will have updates as more information becomes available.
