Truck Overturns, Spills Blank Pennies Over I-95 in Del

Thousands of pennies are littering the roadway on I-95 northbound in DE this morning, after a tractor trailer carrying the currency overturned shortly before 2 a.m., CBS Philadelphia reports. Thursday morning, spilling thousands of blank pennies all over the interstate.

The crash occurred around 1:55 a.m., according to The News-Journal, and the driver only sustained minor injuries and was assessed on scene. Police say the big rig, carrying blank pennies and headed to the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, slammed into a Jersey barrier, overturned and caught fire.

All northbound lanes along I-95 have been shut down and traffic is being redirected to onto the Rt. 141 (Basin Road) southbound. The roadway is expected to reopen around 9 a.m., said DelDOT.

Police suggested drivers find alternate routes as hazmat crews worked to clean the mess.
