French CRS and judicial police work near the heavy truck that ran into a crowd at high speed celebrating the Bastille Day July 14 national holiday on the Promenade des Anglais killing 80 people in Nice, France, July 15, 2016.
At least 80 people were killed, and many more injured, including 18 seriously, he told reporters.
“The vile terrorism has returned in full force and destroyed the celebration of freedom, equality and fraternity”, Israel’s opposition leader Isaac Herzog (Zionist Union) said on his Twitter page Friday. The official said weapons and grenades were found inside the 25-ton, unmarked articulated truck.
“It has shocked France, it has rocked it to its core”, Bishop said.
British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said he was “shocked and saddened by the appalling events in Nice, and the awful loss of life”.
A few hours later, the 40 or so people gathered in a room for victims’ families at the Pasteur hospital in the French Riviera town had the horror of it all etched on their faces.
Christian Estrosi, the regional president in Nice, said some of the city’s 1,200 security cameras had pinpointed the moment the attacker boarded the truck, far from the seaside “in the hills of Nice” and could follow his path to the promenade.
Hollande announced that the state of emergency would be extended by three months and army reservists called up to boost security.
Wassim Bouhlel, a Nice native, told The Associated Press that he saw a truck drive into the crowd.
– A spokesman for new British Prime Minister Theresa May called the attack “a bad incident”, adding “we are shocked and concerned”.
“An attack on France, therefore, is an attack on the entire free world”, he said. “Heard noises, cries that I will never forget”.
Foreign Minister Didier Reynders of Belgium said, “We condemn such an attack, maybe a terrorist attack, but such an attack in France again”.
Another woman told the station she was sheltering in a restaurant on the promenade with some 200 other people, where things had calmed down about two hours after the incident.
Four months ago, Belgian Islamists linked to the Paris attackers killed 32 people in Brussels.
Here is what we know about what French President Francois Hollande has declared an “undeniable” terrorist attack.
Reactions from across the globe began pouring in late Thursday after a terror attack struck the southern French city of Nice, killing scores.
It was not immediately clear who would have been behind an attack, but France has recently seen a spate of dramatic assaults from by jihadist groups, including the Islamic State group which straddles Iraq and Syria.

President Jacob Zuma said in a statement released by the Foreign Ministry that South Africa “stands firmly with the worldwide community in condemning all forms of terrorism and stands in solidarity with the government of the Republic of France as they mourn the death of their citizens”.
