While nothing is a certainty in this longer-than-usual election campaign, which includes a strong NDP helmed by Thomas Mulcair and a stable, politically-skilled Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Conservatives, one could definitely feel the enthusiasm in the air during Trudeau’s visit.

So most of the premiers, from whatever party, have taken a low-key approach to partisan activity during this federal campaign. But Kathleen Wynne is not only a Liberal politician; she is the premier of Ontario.

“Maybe the personal animosity between Wynne and Harper – whatever triggered it – is governing both their behaviours”, Kay said in an interview.

As of Sunday, the New Democrats only have 22 nominees in Alberta, which trails behind the Green party with 24, the Liberals with 26, and the Conservatives with a full 34.

Certainly Mulcair’s decision proves how right Justin Trudeau has been, in his wariness of coalition overtures.

Mulcair went to Surrey, B.C., a community hard hit by gun violence in recent months, to promise he would raise the number of front-line police officers across the country by 2,500.

“That’s something that we’ll be looking into as we move forward”, he said, answering a question from the Georgia Straight.
