PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday announced Canada’s candidacy for election to the United Nations (UN) Security Council as a non-permanent member for a two-year term that begins in 2021.

“With a renewed commitment to global peace and security, now is the time for our return”, Trudeau said Wednesday at U.N. Headquarters, in front of a room packed with diplomats and journalists. Canada’s central bank cut rates twice past year and was leaning toward another cut in January but held off in part to see what fiscal-policy measures the Liberal government planned.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says setting aside parental leave that can only be taken by fathers may be a way of improving the flexibility available to young families. Ban said at the time that the agency was never meant to exist for 65 years but “exists because of political failure”.
The 44-year-old Trudeau said his country has shown it has a role to play on the Security Council.
Trudeau has drawn worldwide attention by appointing a Cabinet with an equal number of men and women, and called on world leaders to follow Canada’s lead.
“What we’re looking at is not so much trying to jolt the economy into life, as trying to lay the groundwork, the foundation for better productivity over the long term, and not just an influx of cash”, he said during the televised town hall.
The Security Council is one of the six main organs established under the UN Charter.
The 15-member council has five veto-powers – the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China – and 10 members elected for two-year terms.
Trudeau says the travails of the Senate and senators under the watchful eye of the Mounties pointed to a need for more transparency in the upper chamber even if none will be criminally charged. He mentioned fixing subway signals as an example.
Jeanne Shaheen raised the issue directly with Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains in Washington, said a business source who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
When asked about his plan to run deficits, Trudeau says he is laying the groundwork for long-term economic growth.

“The Canadian dollar will always bounce around a bit, but there’s a range in which it is comfortable and we tend to be in that now”, Trudeau said.
